Can Black men survive falling U.S. economy?
A recent study indicates that of the major ethnic groups impacted by unemployment during the current U.S. recession, Black men have experienced the greatest job losses since the crisis officially began in November 2007.
“What's missing from national media coverage of this recession is plainly a great deal of dishonesty about who's losing their jobs. This is overwhelmingly a blue collar, retail sales, low level recession,” said Andrew Sum, professor of economics and director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., which published the study.
“The Impacts of the 2007-2009 National Recession on Male Employment in the U.S. through January 2009; The Massive Concentration of Job Losses Among Males Especially Black Men and Blue Collar Workers” tracked employment losses in the recession across gender groups of workers overall, and in the four major ethnicities—Asian, Black, Hispanic and White.
The study found that:
•Males are 80 percent (3.1 million) of all people who have lost their jobs in America;
•Black male employment fell by 6.4 percent (482,000), compared to overall Black employment at almost 3 percent (463,000); and
•The unemployment gap between Black men and women is historically unprecedented with Blacks the only group where the gap favors women.
The Fatherhood Center provides mentoring, life skills, legal assistance, education and counseling classes.
According to Mr. Young, self-help and entrepreneurship is a sure route out of joblessness for Black men. “It's a low cost investment and many times a high reward.
In Newark, we have a thriving market when it comes to folks selling things, especially when stores are going up on their prices.
We just encourage the men who attend our programs to turn their skills when they were out doing negative things into something positive,” he said.

Roderick Scott makes bail
The man accused of killing a Hilton teen is now out of jail. After he said a few words, Roderick Scott sped away in a friend's car.
Scott made bail just before 3 p.m. His bail was $25,000. He is accused of shooting and killing 17-year old Christopher Cervini in Greece. Scott says it was self defense.
News 10NBC reporter Berkeley Brean was waiting outside the jail this afternoon to talk to Scott. Once released, Scott walked out of the doors quickly and went right for his friend's car who was parked next to the sidewalk.
Scott has been in jail for about a week and a half and it was his girlfriend's mother who put up two properties to meet the bail. He is officially charged with second degree murder.
Greece Police say he shot and killed Christopher Cervini after he confronted Cervini and his two friends on his neighbor's driveway. Scott says it was self defense and that Cervini charged at him. It happened on April 4.
Reporter Berkeley Brean was the only reporter to speak with Scott before he left..
Berkeley Brean: “How does it feel to be out?”
Roderick Scott: “It feels pretty good. “
Brean: “It feels pretty good? What are you going to do now?”
Scott: “No comment.”
Scott’s lawyer John Parrinello said, “He will be staying at home and he will be going back to work to a semi-normal life. Of course life for him will never be normal again because of his arrest and because of the incident that occurred.”
Unfortunately for Roderick Scott, it’s not over. The grand jury has indicted him on a charge but it is secret until the jury rises later this week. Until then, Scott is back home.

Urban League offers solutions to problems
The March 25 report also offers answers in 12 essays that cover education, health, jobs, and home ownership. Essayists included Hal Smith, PhD., vice president of Education and Youth Development at the National Urban League; Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.); Schott Foundation President John Jackson, PhD.; Darrell Gaskin, PhD., of the University of Maryland; Eboni Morris and Lisa Brand Malone of the National Urban League Policy Institute; Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.); William M. Rodgers, PhD., of Rutgers University; economist William E. Spriggs, PhD., of Howard University; J. Phillip Green, PhD., of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Cy Richardson, vice president of Housing and Community Development for the National Urban League; Stephanie J. Jones, PhD., executive director of the National Urban League Policy Institute; Black Enterprise magazine publisher Earl Graves; and Gwendolyn Grant of the Urban League of Kansas City. Among solutions offered by the experts, political leaders and analysts: Education: The Urban League calls for full funding of No Child Left Behind legislation; wants states to compare and report resources available to every student; advocates for support for outstanding teachers and principals and guaranteed all-day access to high quality early childhood education for all three- and four-year-olds. Health: Urban League supports a comprehensive, universal health insurance system for all Americans; creation of a comprehensive health infrastructure for delivery of health education, prevention and intervention initiatives for Blacks; a thorough examination of the criminal justice system as it relates to treatment and rehabilitation of Black males; examination of chronic health conditions in a context of economic, sociologic and environmental contributors; and an increased Career Pipeline and Access for Minorities in the Health Professions. Opportunity to Earn: Urban League wants increased funding for successful examples of workforce training and job placement for less skilled workers ages 16 and 30, such as the Labor Dept.'s “Responsible Reintegration of Youthful Offenders;” wants a percentage of all infrastructure money to go to job training, job placement and job prep of disadvantaged workers; wants targeted investment dollars to reignite the construction industry and fund pre-apprenticeship programs; wants funding for building and renovating schools, community centers, libraries, recreation centers, parks and infrastructure to rebuild urban communities; wants reestablishment of a temporary Public Service Employment program aimed at creating 150,000 to 200,000 jobs in urban areas. Opportunity to Own: Urban League suggests creation of a “Homebuyers' Bill of Rights” that would fund education and counseling, financial literacy, credit counseling, fair housing advocacy and foreclosure prevention assistance using national minority housing groups with track records of effective counseling assistance; provide for Individual Development Accounts for homeownership administered by employers with a matching savings plan for future purchase of a home and housing tax credits for those with lower incomes; and a stronger Community Reinvestment Act to include non-bank financial institutions and greater encouragement of banks to respond to the needs of low- and moderate-income communities with stricter standards that cut out incentives for predatory loans and offer increased transparency; create a HUD Task Force to investigate and prosecute violations of fair housing laws and public hearings to hold HUD accountable; and make changes to make credit reporting easier for the public to understand and create a public awareness campaign about credit scoring and wealth. Credit reporting bureaus that maintain inaccurate files would be penalized. Opportunity to Prosper: Urban League calls for the Small Business Administration's Community Express Loan program to be restored and made permanent; continued funding of the New Market Tax Credit Program beyond 2009; stronger and greater enforcement of federal minority business opportunity goals in government contracting; expansion of the number of businesses involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math); and development of an affordable national health insurance option. The report's Equality Index found Blacks remained “twice as likely as Whites to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and more than six times as likely to be incarcerated.” “Blacks and Hispanics are more likely to live in poor and neglected neighborhoods and homes. For instance 46 percent of Blacks live in neighborhoods where 20 percent of the residents are poor. These neighborhoods suffer from: poor air quality, lack of healthy food options, dilapidated housing, lack of clean open spaces for recreational activity, and overabundance of liquor stores and fastfood restaurants, and little access to quality health care resources,” observed essayists Eboni Morris and Lisa Bland Malone, of the National Urban League Policy Institute. The analysts called for more investment in infrastructure and neighborhood improvements, green building initiatives, smart growth techniques and a renewed focus in environmental justice, reevaluation of community designs to improve health, inducements for food retailers to locate in underserved neighborhoods, increased community capacity-building to allow people to advocate for themselves and learn more about health risks and prevention; reduction of housing segregation and enforcement of fair housing laws, and expansion of federal initiatives designed to improve the health of homes. The index found slight declines for Blacks in several areas since last year.
The National Urban League's watershed annual report, “The State of Black America 2009: Message to the President,” calls on the president and the society to deal with negative indicators and the continued problem of racial inequality in American life.

Obama Fried Chicken Won’t Change Name

The man who promised to change the name of his Obama Fried Chicken restaurant has changed something else instead – his mind. Mohammad Jabbar, the manager of the Brooklyn-based eatery, said that the owner decided that those supporting the presidential moniker far outweigh those demanding the name change. But that’s not what the Rev. Al Sharpton and a couple dozen protestors picketing the small, gaudy chicken shack on Rutland Road and Rockaway Parkway in Brownsville wanted to hear. “He wasn’t a man of his word,” one of the protest organizers, Kevin McCall, told The New York Times on Tuesday, referring to the restaurant’s owner. “He didn’t keep his commitment of having this sign down. This is very offensive to African-Americans.” The restaurant had been called Royal Fried Chicken, but the owner decided on a name change hoping to ride the Obama popularity wave, acknowledges Jabbar. The White House isn’t too fond of the restaurant name either. Officials have said that the it is inappropriate to use the president’s name for commercial purposes, according to the Times. In another instance, the first family made it clear that it was opposed to Sasha and Malia dolls manufactured by the company that makes Beanie Babies. The company eventually changed the dolls names. Among others looking to capitalize on the Obama profile have been a German company that produces Obama Chicken Fingers. Many people have expressed outrage at what they see as a stereotypical link between an African-American president and fried chicken. In the case of the Brooklyn chicken joint, Jabbar said that the owner has spent $5,000 on the new sign, and the community overall is supportive. There are roughly four out of five people who want the name to remain the same, he says. “They’re telling us not to remove,” he said. But, McCall, who is planning a protest for Saturday, fired back, “We’re going to continue to keep the pressure on. If he thinks we’re going away that’s not going to happen.”

Arizona State Says No Degree for Obama
Arizona State University says it will not bestow an honorary degree on President Barack Obama – the esteemed Harvard University Law Review Editor, University of Chicago Law professor, former U.S. Senator, best-selling author, Grammy Award-winner, and undeniable leader of the free world – saying it is not clear that his body of work justifies such an honor. Obama, who is scheduled to deliver the spring commencement address at the Tempe, Ariz., campus on May 13, will be denied an honor typically given to commencement speakers. “It’s our practice to recognize an individual for his body of work, somebody who’s been in their position for a long time,” Sharon Keeler, an ASU spokeswoman, told The Press. “His body of work is yet to come. That’s why we’re not recognizing him with a degree at the beginning of his presidency.” The decision is perhaps understandable if one considers the resistance that the state of Arizona had against a Martin Luther King Holiday, but the decision of the six-member academic committee, which has bestowed the honor on much less recognizable individuals, such as Wu Qidi, vice minister of education of the People’s Republic of China, has left many scratching their heads. As Dawn Teo notes this morning in The Huffington Post, “Barry Goldwater received his honorary degree in May 1961, three years before his Republican nomination for president and only eight years into his three decades as a U.S. senator. Sandra Day O’Connor was similarly recognized just three years in her 25 years on the U.S. Supreme Court.” Ironically, Obama will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University of Notre Dame when he delivers the commencement speech May 17. It is customary at Notre Dame to confer a degree on every guest speaker, university spokesman Dennis Brown said, noting that the university tries to select speakers who have made significant contributions to society or can give a compelling message. He declined to comment on Arizona State University’s decision. “ASU is an outstanding university,” Brown said. “Every university has its own traditions and has its own missions. I don’t think it’s at all fair to gauge one against the other. Everybody’s different.” Keeler dismissed the notion that the snub was a presidential dis. “First of all, they should inquire as to what the university’s practice is before making a judgment by what another university might do,” Keeler said. The question for many people is whether President Obama should nix his plans to visit the campus.
Should Obama turn down ASU’s request to speak at graduation?

FBI says e-mail promising `Oprah' tickets is fake
The FBI and "The Oprah Winfrey Show" say Internet users should beware of an e-mail scam that promises attendance at the popular talk show in exchange for the purchase of a plane ticket.
The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center said this week that a circulating e-mail was advertising the "Oprah Millionaire Contest Show," which asks recipients for contact information. It also says those who apply have a chance to win $1 million.
The bureau says the e-mail is fraudulent and not from Winfrey or her show's production company, or Harpo Productions.
Harpo has posted a warning about the scam on the show's Web site. It says authorities told them at least a dozen scams currently promise tickets, travel and money from the Chicago-based show.

Winfrey defends record of her South African school

JOHANNESBURG – Oprah Winfrey acknowledged in a newspaper interview published Saturday that she has made several mistakes at her elite South African school, but said she remains proud of its success.
The recent expulsion of four girls and suspension of three others was the second scandal to hit the Leadership Academy for Girls, which opened in 2007 to groom bright children from deprived backgrounds for a brilliant career. A dorm matron is currently on trial accused of abuse and sexual assault.
"I have made several mistakes and one of them was being overprotective of the girls, which has led to an impression that the school is isolating them from society," Winfrey was quoted as saying in the Weekend Argus.
She said she had also underestimated the extent of homesickness among girls at the boarding school.
Last month, four students were expelled and three others suspended. South African media at the time said they were accused of trying to force students into relationships and to engage in sexual contact.
Winfrey herself hasn't given details of the misconduct. But she said in the newspaper interview that it was "insulting" that the family of one of the expelled girls had complained to the press even though she had been warned before about her behavior.
"Those girls in their own testimony during the (disciplinary) hearing said they knew they were breaking the rules and that they deliberately broke the rules," the talk show queen was quoted as saying.
The institution just outside Johannesburg opened with a blaze of publicity in January 2007 with about 150 girls in 7th and 8th grades. The Academy is expected to grow by one grade each year until it reaches full capacity in 2011, with approximately 450 girls in grades 7 through 12.
Winfrey poured $40 million into the 28-building campus, which is spread across 22 lush acres. It has computer and science labs, a library, theater and wellness center, all protected by strict privacy. Each girl lives in a two-bedroom suite — a far cry from their humble surroundings at home.
It's the fulfillment of a promise Winfrey made to former South African President Nelson Mandela and aims to give poor girls a quality education and prepare them for leadership positions in a country where state schools are struggling to overcome the legacy of white-minority rule.
"The majority of girls are thriving, really fulfilling the dream and vision I had," Winfrey told the newspaper. "They really have exceeded any expectations I had for them."
"In spite of everything that's happened, what keeps me inspired and hopeful is the heart of every girl, because they are wonderful, they are magnificent."
